Nothing could be more pleasant than strolling through the picturesque cobbled streets and lively squares of this area of Rome city centre.
Home to such famous tourist attractions as the Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Campo dè Fiori and Piazza del Popolo, as well as an infinite number of fashionable cafés and delightful renaissance palazzos, this area is full of monuments, museums and churches, many of which contain masterpieces by artists of the calibre of Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio and Bernini.
In Ancient Roman times the area around Piazza Navona and the Pantheon was known as Campus Martius and offered a suburban arena for sport and military exercises.
Having been incorporated into the city in medieval times it later developed to become the heart of the renaissance city and, indeed, it is filled with fine examples of 15th and 16th century architecture. In the 17th century the area finally gained its current appearance thanks to Gian Lorenzo Bernini and his rival Francesco Borromini.
