Piazza di Spagna and the famous Spanish Steps are a must for every visitor to Rome. Indeed, the area has attracted foreign tourists since the 18th century when so many travellers stayed there on their “Grand Tour” of Europe that the area was known as the “English ghetto”.
The square was named after the Spanish Embassy to the Holy See which was built there in the 17th century, while the Spanish Steps were built between 1723 and 1726 in order to join Piazza di Spagna to the French residence above.
The boat-shaped Barcaccia fountain at the foot of the Spanish steps was the last work designed by Pietro Bernini, the father of Gian Lorenzo.
At the foot of the Spanish steps lies Via Condotti, the smartest shopping street in the whole of Rome.
Rome Accommodation apartments AP20 PIAZZA DI SPAGNA, AP28 VIA CONDOTTI, AP37 SPAGNA DELUXE 1, AP38 SPAGNA DELUXE 2 are located just a few yards from the Spanish Steps.
