Rome, area Testaccio

Between the 2nd century BC and the 3rd century AD, wine, oil and grain were delivered to Rome from the colonies at the sea port of Ostia and then taken up the River Tiber to be unloaded. The river port at which they were processed was located in the area which is now known as Testaccio as a result of the fact that, once emptied, the huge terracotta amphorae used to transport the goods were smashed up and tidily piled up in a heap, eventually creating a large hill known as Monte Testaccio (from the Latin term for ‘pottery’, testae).

Located between Via Marmorata and the River Tiber, Testaccio was originally a working class residential area but is now famous for its trattorias and restaurants specializing in authentic Roman cuisine. The area around Monte Testaccio is also famous for its lively nightlife and is home to many fashionable nightclubs. Some of these bars are dug out of the artificial hill and offer their patrons the chance to observe fragments of the amphorae from which the hill is made.

Rome Accommodation apartments in the Testaccio area AP02 TESTACCIO and AP14 PIRAMIDE are perfectly located for visiting places of interest by day and enjoying the night life of Testaccio by night.
