The basilica was built in the 6th century over the catacombs in which the relics of Saint Peter and Saint Paul were hidden during Vespasian’s persecution of Christians.
The Catacombs of San Sebastiano were the first to be referred to as catacombs, although the meaning of the term was later extended to define other underground burial places.
