Probably the oldest place of worship dedicated to the Virgin Mary in Rome and perhaps the first church ever to celebrate a public mass, the basilica of Santa Maria in Trastevere is remarkable for the 21 Roman columns which line its interior some of which come from the ancient Roman Baths of Caracalla.
