Founded by Constantine in 313 and consecrated eleven years later, the church of Saint John Lateran was the first Christian basilica in Rome. Although smaller and more modest than Saint Peter’s church, it is nevertheless the cathedral of Rome and thus the seat of the bishop of Rome (the Pope).
Over the centuries it has been reconstructed and restored on several occasions and now displays an interesting convergence of architectural styles.
