Pilgrims and art lovers crowd this church for two reasons: to see the chains which bound Saint Peter and to photograph the tomb of Pope Julius II designed by Michelangelo in 1550. The basilica was built in the 5th century in to house the chains with which Saint Peter was bound during his imprisonment in Mamertine prison.
