Located at the foot of the Esquiline hill, next to the Colosseum, the 12th century basilica of San Clemente was built on top of a 4th century church which was, in turn, built over a 1st century Roman house.
A 2nd century temple dedicated to the god Mitra was later added to the house which is thought to be built on Republican foundations.
