One of the oldest public museums in the world, the Capitoline Museums fill two buildings - Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo dei Conservatori - in Piazza del Campidoglio. Founded in 1471, when Pope Sixtus IV donated a number of bronze statues to the city of Rome – a tradition perpetuated by other popes who donated many of the ancient treasures excavated by the Vatican - the Capitoline Museums now house some of the best sculptures of the ancient world.
