The largest and most widely visited of Roman catacombs, the catacombs of San Callisto were excavated at the end of the 2nd century and thus named after Pope Callistus I who was killed in Trastevere in 222 as he was celebrating mass. The catacombs of San Callisto were the first official cemetery of the newly founded Roman church.
