The church of Santa Maria Degli Angeli is famous for the marble sundial in the transept inaugurated by Pope Clement XI in 1702.
Able to indicate the position of the pole star and the time at which the sun is at its highest point - exactly midday – when the sun shines through a hole to the right of the window above the entrance to the right nave, the sundial was used to set the clocks of the city until 1846.
