At the height of its splendor, the Circus Maximus could hold up to 200,000 spectators. Mainly used for chariot racing, the race track was famous for the excitement caused when the chariots – which raced in an anticlockwise direction - had to face the tight bends at either end of the stadium. The circus was used until 549.
