Il Vittoriano

Description

Designed by Giuseppe Sacconi and built in 1885 in order to commemorate the Unification of Italy, the Vittoriano monument is decorated with an enormous equestrian statue of the first king of Italy, Victor Emanuel II. Now dedicated to the unknown soldier, the monument is permanently guarded by a guard of honour and protected by a perpetual flame.
