Jewish Ghetto
Description
Having come to Rome in a wave of immigration during the 2nd century BC, the Jewish population of Rome is one of the oldest surviving Jewish communities in Europe. Although the Ghetto real and proper no longer exists – it was demolished and replaced by a new synagogue and the buildings to the south of the Portico d’Ottavia in 1888 – the area is still famous for the many restaurants offering traditional Jewish-Roman cuisine in Via del Portico d’Ottavia.
