The best conserved Roman stadium in Italy, Maxentius’ circus was able to accommodate over 10,000 spectators. Commenced by Maxentius in approximately 309, the arena was so big that it was still incomplete on his death. It is still possible to distinguish the starting blocks from which the chariot races set off.
The track was positioned around a long central hillock upon which there were a series of ponds alternated with sculptures. The centre of the hillock was marked by Domitian’s obelisk which was moved to Bernini’s fountain in Piazza Navona in 1650 on the orders of Pope Innocence X.
