Mouth of Truth
Description
According to legend, the Bocca della Verità bites off the fingers of any liars who put their hands into its mouth. Those who have seen the film Roman Holiday will remember the scene in which Audrey Hepburn cries out in horror when Gregory Peck pretends to lose his whole hand.
The Bocca della Verità is located in the portico of one of the most precious medieval churches in Rome: the Church of Santa Maria in Cosmedin. Built by Pope Adrian I in the 8th century over two existing Imperial age structures, the church was altered in the 12th century when a seven storey bell tower and a portico were added.
