The Palatine hill is generally considered to be the place in which Rome was founded: the place where the she-wolf raised Romulus and Remus. Being the most central of the seven hills of Rome, it was the most desirable place to live during the republican and imperial ages and, indeed, the inhabitants of the area included Augustus, Tiberius, Nero, the Flavians and Septimius Severus.
The temples and buildings built on the hill fell into ruin in the middle ages and were gradually buried under new monasteries, churches and fortresses. During renaissance times a number of wealthy families - especially the Farnese family - created lovely gardens there. Most of the Palatine hill is now occupied by the ruins of a complex of buildings built by Domitian and used as an imperial palace for over three centuries.
