Built between 1455 and 1464 by the Venetian Cardinal Pietro Barbo (later Pope Paul II) using materials taken from the Colosseum, Palazzo Venezia was initially used as the embassy of the Republic of Venice, although its most famous tenant was Benito Mussolini who set up his war operations room in the building’s map room.
