Legend has it that in the 16th century, when freedom of the expression was still an unknown concept, a certain tailor from the Vatican named Pasquino started to stick pieces of paper adorned with satirical rhymes making fun of the church and the aristocracy to the statue located in the centre of this tiny square. The tradition is still continued today.
