Over 30 metres high, the column after which Piazza Colonna is named was inspired by the nearby Trajan’s column, which is approximately one century older, and was built in 180 AD to commemorate the death of Marcus Aurelius.
Piazza Colonna is home to Palazzo Chigi (Tel 06 67793111; www.governo.it; Piazza Colonna 370), the official residence of the Prime Minister of Italy.
