Designed by Michelangelo, Piazza del Campidoglio on the Capitoline hill is often considered the most beautiful square in Rome.
The middle of the square is marked by a copy of the only ancient Roman bronze equestrian statue to have survived the middle ages, a statue of the great 2nd century emperor and philosopher Marcus Aurelius.
