Marking the northern entrance to the city of Rome, Piazza del Popolo was built in 1538 at the point of convergence of Via di Ripetta, Via del Corso and Via del Babuino. Known as the Tridente, the square was completely transformed by Giuseppe Valadier between 1818 and 1824.
