Designed and built between 1656 and 1667 as a place of aggregation for Christians from all over the world, Bernini’s great square is one of the largest public spaces in the world. Observed from above, it is shaped like a giant keyhole with two semicircular colonnades creating a huge oval space which seems to lead the faithful inside the church. According to Bernini, the colonnade represented the “maternal arms of the Church”.
