Porta Maggiore

Description

Built by Claudius in 52 in order to carry the Aqua Claudia and Aqua Aniene Nuova aqueducts across Via Prenestina and Via Labicana, the arches of the gate still span the basalt-paved road in which it is possible to distinguish the grooves left by passing carriages.
