Tradition has it that the 28 steps of the Scala Santa are exactly the same steps that Jesus Christ climbed in order to enter the palace of Pontius Pilate in Jerusalem. Brought to Rome by Saint Helen in the 4th century, they are considered so sacred that the faithful climb them on their knees.
