Perhaps the most imposing renaissance palazzo in Rome, Cancelleria Palace - Palazzo della Cancelleria - is located just a few metres from Piazza Navona.
It was commissioned by the venetian cardinal Riario at the end of the XV century. The palace was also witness to many important historical events, especially during the XIX century: it was the headquarters of the French government in Rome during the Napoleonic occupation of Rome.
Also inside the palace, Pellegrino Rossi, the pope’s head of Government, was assassinated here in November 1848: this event led to the escape of pope Pius IX from Rome and the birth of the Risorgimento’s Roman Republic, later subdued by French forces in in June 1849.
