Theatre of Marcello

Not unlike a small Colosseum emerging from the ruins to the east of Via del Teatro di Marcello, this monumental theatre is a remarkable construction composed of a Roman amphitheatre topped by a fine renaissance palazzo.

Commissioned by Julius Caesar and completed by Augustus who dedicated it to his favourite nephew Marcellus, the son of his sister Octavia, who died prematurely in 23 BC, the original theatre had a capacity of 20,000 people. Although restored on several occasions following fires and earthquakes, it eventually became a deposit for building materials.
